Initially established in 1953 as Medical College Patiala, Punjabi University served as its primary partner. The college changed its name after joining Baba Farid University of Health Sciences in 1973, becoming the Government Medical College.

The great physician and pioneer Dr. Tulsi Dass Chugh founded the Government Medical College Patiala. MBBS is the undergraduate medical course taught in medical college.
