Gomel State Medical University, located in Gomel, Belarus, was founded in November 1990. Professor Yuri Ivanovich Bandazhevsky, a doctor of medical sciences, served as the director of the university. The emergency need for medical personnel in the Gomel and Mogilev regions arised by the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident.
